Field observations of an intertidal population of the marine gastropod Trophon geversianus (Gastropoda: Muricidae) were carried out at bahia Laredo situated at the Strait of Magellan (Chile), in order to characterize its habitat and reproduction cycles. The duration of the intracapsular development was estimated by monitoring egg-masses, wich were previously located and marked. Adult specimens were held under controlled conditions in sea-water aquaria, and a description and duration of the encapsulated development was estimated from the moment of spawned egg-massses. At the field the spawning of 7". geversianus is restricted to spring and summer (October-March) and therefore the hatching of juveniles occurs during autumn (April). During it development, embryos of T. geversianus are supplemented through the
provision of numerous nurse-eggs (near 900 - 2000 per capsule). Within initial stages of the embryo development, these nurse-eggs start to disintegrate and numerous yolk granules become finally densely sparsed into the albuminous encapsulated fluid, before such nutritive material
begin to be ingested by the viable embryos. The encapsulated development took an average of 150 (s.d.: 10) days at field, whereas in the lab the duration varied betwen 120 and 150 days (mean temp. 11.5 °C).
