The middle of the XVIII century is commonly indicated as the period in which the scientific knowledge of the Austral American wildlife, particularly that corresponding to the Magellan Strait's region, began, disgregarding the contributions made by the navigators of earlier centuries. This article displays all the information which could have been known on the area of the strait of Magellan's wildlife before the XVIII century, and is based on the carefull review of documents produced by navigators and explorers (narratives and maps) interpreting it accordingly with the present day knowledge on flora and fauna. The work of nature observers during the XVI and XVII centuries is regarded as pioneering and its is estimated that their novelties influenced the later foundational studies of botanical and zoological sciences at Magallanes and Austral America.
