Tephra layers derived from seven distinct volcanic eruptions are observed in Tierra del Fuego and along the northwest shore of the Straits of Magellan. The following volcanoes are identified as the source of the indicate tephras: the Reclus for the two oldest tephra dated as 14,570 ± 420 and 12,480 ± 470 years B.P.; Monte Burney for three tephra dated as 7,920 ± 385, 3,770 ± 200, and 505 ± 60 years B.P.; the Hudson more than 900 km to the north in Aysén, for a characteristically grey to green tephra dated as.8,775 ± 150 years B.P.; the Aguilera for a tephra dated as just younger than 3,345 years B.P. In the Andean foothills northwest of the Straits of Magellan many other tephra occur due to the proximity with the source volcanos. The tephra described by Massone in the Tres Arroyos cave on Tierra del Fuego is identified as the 12,480 years B.P. Reclus ash. This suggests that the older of Massone's two age dates for this tephra, which is >1 1 .880 years B.P., more closely approches the conect date for the human occupation of this cave. This is consistent with evidence for human induced fire on Tierra del Fuego dating back to 13,280 years B.P and an age of 12,390 years B.P. for the occupation of the Cueva del Medio and of 12,990 year B.P. for the occupation of the Cueva 1 del lago Sofía, both just north of the Straits of Magellan.
