El análisis sistemático de los artefactos líticos y los huesos de animales recuperados en un sitio en el sector fronterizo de la Región de Aisén, ejemplifica el potencial de colecciones procedentes de sitios aislados, excavados muchas veces sin mayor asesoría profesional. Aunque no cuenten con un adecuado contexto a nivel del sitio (ej. estratigrafía y plantas) o la región circundante (ej. catchment, prospecciones regionales) -como sería ideal en una perpectiva arqueológica moderna- este tipo de colecciones, son demasiado comunes en nuestros países como para permitirnos desconocerlas. El uso de métodos explícitos y rigurosos -unido a un enfoque crítico que, más que buscar coherencias, "enfrenta" argumentos y líneas de evidencia contrastantes - permite explorar una serie de hipótesis específicas y, por ende, interesantes sobre la ocupación de estos valles pre-andinos entre los siglos I y XVIII de nuestra era (ej. cambios en estrategias de movilidad y subsistencia, contexto funcional de la adopción del caballo, de la cerámica, sistemas tecnológicos y organizativos) Finalmente, se hace uso de algunas predicciones simplistas derivadas de la teoría ecológica y la economía formal a fin de interpretar los patrones observados en términos procesuales y sugerir hipótesis que deberán contrastarse en futuras investigaciones.
The systematic analysis of lithic artifacts and animal bones recovered from this site on the Región de Aisén -close to the Argentinian border- shows the potential value of collections from isolated sites, often dug without an adequate professional guidance. Although these collections may not fulfill the requirements of modern archaeology in the sense of being integrated into a solid intrasite and inter-site context (stratigrapy/plans and regional surveys, respectively), they represent an important proportion of the archaelogical materials available in our countries, to justify their disregard. The use of explicit and rigurous methods in the context of a critical strategy that seeks to contrast different lines ofevidence, allows the generation of interesting hypotheses on the human occupation of these Andean valleys between the I" and the XVIII centuries (ej. changes in subsistence, settlement and technological organization, functional context for the adoption of horses or ceramics). We finally resort to very simple and general ecological and economic principies, in order to advance some hypotheses to test in future research programs.
