Una de las primeras y más duraderas consecuencias de la relación establecida entre los europeos y los Aónikenk (aborígenes de la Patagonia meridional oriental), durante el siglo XVIII, fue la adopción por parte de éstos del hábito de consumo de tabaco. En este artículo se da cuenta del origen, desarrollo y significado de esta costumbre social, así como se informa también sobre los tipos y características de las pipas empleadas por los indígenas, objetos cuya elaboración formó parte de su acervo artesanal y que llegaron a ser muy estimados por sus dueños.
One of the first and more everlasting consequences of the relation established among the Europeans and the Aonikenk (aborigins of Southeastern Patagonia) during the XVIII Century was their adoption of the tobacco usage. This article reports on the origin, development and significance of this social custom, and also informs on the types and characteristics of the pipes employed by the indians, objects whose manufacture formed part of their craftmanship heritage and which became highly treasured by their owners.
